CPD - Use of the network

Effective use of the School Network

The school ICT network should ideally support the way in which the rest of the school works. Staff should be able to easily locate and share resources, including planning, learning and teaching material, policies and timetables which have been saved in a logical way. Unfortunately this is more easily said than done and school networks can quickly become confusing.

Each school does things differently and although in the past ITASS have recommended a particular set up, we have found that this is not workable in most schools. ITASS recommends the following procedure for structuring the network:

  • Discussion with SBT, ICTCO and ITASS Advisor to discuss possible structures which support the school's aims and ways of working
  • Meeting with staff to discuss and agree on a new proposed structure
  • Time for staff to tidy up their shared documents before the restructuring
  • Backup is made of the existing structure
  • SBT and ICTCO spend time clearing the network of duplicated, redundant and mis-saved files
  • New structure is introduced with guidance for teachers
  • New structure is monitored on a termly basis with regular reminders to staff

Contact an ITASS curriculum team advisor for support with this process.
