Penguin mania

Penguin Mania
London Borough of Newham
Year 6/7 Transfer Unit

This optional Year 6/7 Transfer Unit illustrates how the National Curriculum programmes of study and attainment targets in science for Key Stages 2 and 3 can be translated into a practical plan that can be used by Year 6 and 7 teachers.

The materials show how science might be taught to groups of children who often transfer to a new school from Year 6 to Year 7. They exemplify continuity and progression, in pupil’s knowledge, understanding and skills of science, as they move from Year 6 to Year 7.

BBC schools - Open Archive - A resource of downloadable video clips which can be used for educational purposes under the terms of the Creative Archive Licence. These clips were made available as part of an 18-month BBC-wide trial to introduce and test the concept behind the Creative Archive Licence. Follow the links below to view clips about penguins.

  • Windswept Adelie penguins - This clip from 'Open Archive' opens with shots of a snow-covered, windswept fluffy penguin set against snow-covered mountains. The penguin flaps its wings and looks around. The clip cuts to a shot of a similar young penguin glancing around and zooms out as adult penguins come into view. One penguin stands next to him and appears to have a conversation with another, they waddle on by. The camera zooms into a close up of the young penguin again as other adult penguins walk past.
  • Elephant seals and penguins - This clip from 'Open Archive' opens with a hazy shot of a group of elephant seals on a beach, some are lying down whilst two play in the middle of the scene. The shot pans from left to right as the seals move across the beach and then focuses on three penguins walking towards the camera. The clip cuts to a panning shot of two elephant seals bashing against each other in the surf.
  • Emperor penguins - This clip from 'Open Archive' shows speeded up camera shots of emperor penguins huddling together in groups in a frozen landscape as night falls, with big land mass in the background. There is then a speeded up film of emperor penguins moving across the same landscape as night becomes day again.
